Quick Notes about Google Android:
Android allows developers to write applications using Java libraries developed by Google. Android is a complete set of software for mobile devices including an operating system and key mobile applications.
- Over 50,000 apps in Android App Store
- 100 000 new activations of Google Android phones per per day
- Originally based on the Linux 2.6 Kernel, also uses C and C++ and Java ALL applications use Java, making a uniformed framework
- Can even modify the OS and current apps
- Operating System versions tend to be named after desserts (Eclair, Cupcake, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb)
- Designed for easy use for OEM’s (Original Equipment Manufacturer). Open Handset Alliance
- WebKIT is the core of the browser. Same core as Apple
- Android 1.5, or “Cupcake” allowed video recording, support for the stereo Bluetooth profile, a customizable onscreen keyboard system, voice recognition, and the AppWidget framework (which allowed developers to create their own home screen widgets).
- Many phones still use backdated OS such as 1.6 or 1.5, so backwards compatibility for apps can be an issue. World’s first complete and open mobile platform
- Version 4.0 or "Ice Cream Sandwich" was announced on October 19, 2011 and included facial recognition unlock amongst other improvements.
